Strengthening Canberra’s police and emergency services

Canberra is a safe, welcoming and inclusive city, and our police and emergency services are there to support us to make sure it stays that way.

The ACT’s police and emergency services are our first responders in times of crisis and operate with some of the best response times in the country. This Budget will deliver a significant boost to frontline staff and better equipment to ensure they can keep our community safe as it continues to grow.

Investing in our police

We’re supporting ACT Policing over the next four years to transition towards a community-focused services model that will deliver a more visible, more connected and more efficient police service.

This includes recruiting more than 60 new ACT Policing personnel, while investing in better tools and technology so that all police can be more mobile, agile and engaged with the community.

This new investment will support ACT Policing to deliver a system-wide approach to crime prevention, disruption and response activities, supporting our efforts to reduce recidivism by 25 per cent by 2025.

Strengthening our firefighting services

The ACT Government is investing to support our frontline emergency services, to help ensure we maintain our national-leading emergency response times and help build workforce diversity.

Our investment through this Budget will see ACT Fire & Rescue hire 36 more firefighters through two recruit colleges. These recruitment rounds will have a particular focus on continuing to grow the diversity of ACT Fire & Rescue staff, in line with the Women in Emergency Services Strategy and the Indigenous Fire and Rescue Employment Strategy.

We will also deliver a new aerial fire-fighting vehicle to replace the existing appliance well ahead of its scheduled retirement. This will provide our firefighters with a more reliable appliance to fight fires in our town centres and suburbs, and respond to high-rise incidents as our city becomes denser.

We will also purchase a new pumper for ACT Fire & Rescue, augmenting the agency’s existing vehicle replacement program.

Two new emergency service stations

We will start planning for new ACT Ambulance Service and ACT Fire & Rescue stations in the City and the Molonglo Valley. These combined new stations will support our emergency services to keep Canberrans safe in our fast-growing suburbs and ensure our emergency response times remain among the best in Australia no matter where people live across our city.

Through the 2019-20 ACT Budget we are ensuring our investment in police and emergency services grows along with our city so that our first responders have the resources they need to keep the Canberra community safe.
