Environment

The ACT has long led the nation in environmental innovation and the transition to a low carbon economy. We are on track to deliver our commitment to power Canberra with 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2020. We are also pursuing Australia’s most ambitious emissions reduction efforts across Canberra’s transport fleet.

$348 million over 4 years to meet our environmental commitments

By 2020 we will meet 100 per cent of Canberra’s electricity needs from renewable sources.

Our innovative reverse-auction process has secured affordable and reliable energy supply from 10 wind and solar farms across Australia, including the Royalla Solar Farm in Canberra, the Crookwell Wind Farm in New South Wales, the Ararat Wind Farm in Victoria, and the Hornsdale Wind Farm in South Australia.

This Budget delivers more resources to preserve the Molonglo River Corridor & strengthen community conservation efforts across the ACT.

Reducing our energy consumption

We are helping households and small to medium sized businesses to reduce their electricity consumption through the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme.

The scheme has delivered 1 million energy saving items to over 70,000 ACT households and businesses, including 17,800 lower income households.

Protecting our environment

70 per cent of the ACT’s land is undeveloped - either protected in national parks and nature reserves, or managed as pine plantation.

This includes the preservation of the largest public patch of nationally endangered yellow box woodland, and the largest patches of temperate native grassland in Australia.

In this budget: 50 new eletcric vehicle charging stations, more resources to control invasion species, continuing our ACTsmart programs reducing waste energy and water consumption, an ecotourism woodlands learning Centre for the Mulligans Flat Sancturary
